Cincinnati, Ohio – The No. 2/4 Transylvania women's basketball team registered its second highest scoring amount of the season, marching to a 92-50 win over the Mount St. Joseph University Lions on Wednesday night at the Harrington Center.
Dasia Thornton grabbed her fourth double-double of the season, matching her career high of 15 rebounds to go with a game-high 18 points on a 9 for 11 shooting night to lead a suffocating two-way effort by the visiting Pioneers.
Transylvania improved to 18-0 on the season to continue its best start to a season in program history and moved to 10-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Lions dropped to 7-12 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
The Pioneers arrived in Cincinnati and immediately went to work, shooting 53 percent in the first quarter while holding Mount St. Joseph to 3 of 17 shooting from the field to claim a 24-10 lead after the first quarter. Transylvania's defense remained unwavering, holding the Lions to only 10 points for the second straight quarter as the number-two ranked team in the nation by the WBCA corralled a 45-20 halftime advantage.
Thornton nearly earned her double-double in the first half alone, spearing 10 points with nine rebounds by the break. Several of her counterparts also displayed their potency as Madison Kellione scored 12 of her 17 points in the first half and Kennedi Stacy tallied 11 of her 12 total in the opening half.
Thornton and Laken Ball carried the load in the third quarter, combining for 16 points as the rout was on. The Pioneers' reserves continued the hustle in the final quarter, outscoring the Lions 19 to 3 before settling into closing time.
Ball finished the night with 16 points while Samantha Cornelison drained 4 of 7 three-pointers to end the game with 16 points. The Pioneers displayed their team mastery in several aspects, outscoring the Lions in the paint 52-16, and 28-6 via points off turnovers.
Transy shot 48 percent from the field on the night while holding the Lions to 33 percent shooting.
Transylvania returns to Lexington for its next home contest on Saturday, February 12 to host the Anderson University Ravens. The Pioneers will honor their seniors in a pregame Senior Day celebration before tipping off against the Ravens at 3:00 p.m. at the Beck Center.
