Florence, Ky. - On Thursday morning, the Transylvania Pioneers baseball team took on Alfred State for the second time in three days at Y'alls Park in Florence, Kentucky. It was a perfect day for baseball, the sun was shining on the field and it was a mild 60 degrees out as the Pioneers began their third game in the same amount of days.
After falling behind 3-0 to Alfred State at the end of the first inning, the Transylvania Pioneers were able to get Alfred State scoreless for the second. For the Pios bottom half of the inning they were able to get two players on base with singles from sophomore Brennan Perry and first-year Braden Becker, but were unable to bring them home and ended the inning still scoreless.Â
The third inning was more of the same, as both teams couldn't seem to find a way to bring a baserunner home. Going into the top of the fourth inning the score was still 3-0, Alfred State leading. In the bottom of the fourth the Pios were finally able to get runs on the board, with a huge 2-out triple coming from first-year Calvin Schubert that brought in 2 runs. At the end of the fourth the score was 3-2, Alfred State still leading.
In the bottom of the fifth the Transylvania Pioneers were able to tie the game at 3-3 from a double by sophomore Trent Pahl, batting in sophomore Trent Youngblood. Later in the inning the Pioneers grounded out, but brought baserunner Pahl home to take the lead 4-3.Â
In the sixth inning both teams went scoreless, but in the top of the seventh Alfred State was able to bat in one run. The Transylvania Pioneers matched Alfred State with one run in the inning as well, coming by a sacrifice fly from Pahl to bring Youngblood home and take the lead once again. At the end of the seventh inning the score was 5-4, Transylvania leading.Â
After a 4-run inning for Alfred State, the score was 8-5 going into the ninth, as Transylvania was unable to bring anyone home in the inning. For the top of the ninth, Transylvania held Alfred State scoreless for the inning and kept themselves in the game. Down three runs heading into the bottom of the ninth, Transylvania was able to bring home Bryce Dreher and advance Walter Munday to third off of a ground rule double from TJ Keck to make the score 8-6. With the tying runner on second base, the very next batter Perry singled to right center field to bring home Munday but junior Chase Harvard who pinch ran for Keck was called out at home plate to end the game. The Alfred State Pioneers took the win 8-7.
The Transylvania Pioneers are back in action Friday night at Earle Combs Stadium in Richmond, Kentucky to take on Otterbein University with a 6:00 PM scheduled first pitch.Â
