Richmond, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team fell on Friday night to the Otterbein University Cardinals at Earle Combs Stadium on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky.
TJ Keck and
Walter Munday each homered, but a large early deficit sunk the Pioneers, as they were defeated by a final score of 19-4.
The Pioneers had a rough start to the night defensively as they fell far behind early in the game. By the end of the top of the second, the Cardinals put up a 16-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Transylvania's bats came to life as
Walter Munday blasted a high drive to right for a solo homer, and
TJ Keck, next up, sent a no-doubter to left center. The back to back home runs brought needed energy to Transylvania, however they remained considerably behind on the board.
Otterbein responded in the top of the third and plated three more, to reinforce their lead. In the bottom of the third, the offensive parade continued as the Pioneers scored two on a single from
Brennan Perry. After the astounding 23 runs scored in just the first three innings, suddenly the game slowed down. The Pios bullpen locked down and put up zeros on the board for the rest of the night.
Griffin Hall came in and threw 4.0 scoreless, and
Sam Flora pitched 2.0 strong innings with three strikeouts. However, despite the turnaround from Transy, the Cardinals protected their lead and the score remained unchanged for the final six innings. The Pioneers were defeated by a final score of 19-4.
Transylvania crosses off their fourth game of the week and look ahead to a busy weekend in Richmond, as they take on the University of Chicago tomorrow, Saturday at 2:30 PM, as well as a rematch against Otterbein also on Saturday, with a 6:00 scheduled start.
