Transylvania baseball bounce back to beat Otterbein in Richmond

Richmond, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team avenged their Friday night loss, as they defeated the Otterbein University Cardinals on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Earle Combs Stadium. It was another high scoring affair, but with an improved defensive performance from the day prior, Transy took the game 14-12.

Freshman pitcher Connor Arnold took the ball for the Pioneers, and was sharp from the start, as Transy retired the side in order to start the afternoon. In the bottom of the first, they made a statement as Trent Youngblood got ahold of one and sent it out over the right field wall for a solo home run. Next up, Trent Pahl walked, putting Walter Munday at the plate. He connected on a fastball that sailed over the wall, and finally landed out on the Eastern Kentucky track, for another home run. The pair of long balls put Transylvania up 3-0 early.

The Cardinals found a run in the second to make it a 3-1 game, but Braden Becker ripped a double to score Brennan Perry and get the score right back in the bottom of the second. Transy only allowed one extra base hit in the third, but Otterbein put up 5 runs, to go ahead 6-4. Despite the harsh weather, Arnold buckled down and made quick work of the fourth and fifth innings, not allowing a base runner, which set the stage for a Transylvania comeback.

With the bases loaded, Munday continued his production as he legged out an infield single to plate one. TJ Keck then drove in the tying run on a fielder's choice, but Otterbein escaped with the score tied at 6 apiece. The draw didn't last long, as in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals found two more runs to take the lead back. However, Transy responded with the biggest inning of the afternoon. A Calvin Schubert double drove in two, and Pahl came through with a hard-hit single to score Schubert, making it 10-8 Pioneers. Keck blasted one to opposite field for a triple, adding to the lead, 12-8.

In the eighth, Munday hit a moonshot even further than his first homer of the day, that also cleared the netting and bounced away on the track. The blast put the Pios up 14-8 and marked Munday's third home run in just the last two games. The sophomore finished the day with 5 RBI.

Arnold continued his strong work through the afternoon on the mound, and finally ran into trouble in the top of the ninth after a series of singles from Otterbein. With two outs in the ninth of a two-run game, with runners on second and third, freshman Kaden Hill struck out a Cardinal batter swinging to earn his first collegiate save. Fellow freshman pitcher Arnold took the win after 8.1 strong innings of work.

Transylvania wraps up their fifth game this week and look to finish on a strong note tomorrow, taking on the University of Chicago twice, starting at 11:00 AM and Game 2 with a scheduled 2:30 PM start, also at Earle Combs Stadium in Richmond.
