Transylvania baseball sweep University of Chicago in doubleheader to wrap up week

Richmond, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team finished their sixth and seventh games of the week on a strong note, as they swept the University of Chicago Maroons on a doubleheader Sunday. The Pioneers took game one by a 10-0 mercy rule finish in the seventh inning, and kept up the pace in game two, winning 11-5.

In game one, freshman Lee Watson started on the mound and was dealing from the first pitch. In the bottom of the second, a Walter Munday sac fly got the Pios on the board first. In the fourth, a Trent Pahl long ball gave them another, and a series of hits put Transy up 4-0. Watson continued to cruise on the mound, only allowing one single hit through six innings. Leading 5-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, Transylvania exploded again lead by doubles from Trent Youngblood and Pahl. Up 8-0, TJ Keck homered to right center for a two-run shot, as a seventh inning walk-off, as the Pioneers were up 10-0.

Besides the high offensive output, Watson had an outstanding day on the mound for Transy, as he pitched all 7 innings of the contest, only allowing two hits and three walks, to go along with seven strikeouts.

In game two, the Maroons plated the first run in the top of the first, but their lead didn't last long as Youngblood sent a drive to right center for a two-run homer. The power showcase continued as Keck went opposite field for another home run, putting Transy ahead 3-1.  In the top of the third, the Maroons responded and found three runs of their own to take the lead. However, once again the lead was short lived as a Keck hit a game tying RBI single.

Chicago went up 5-4 in the fourth, but in the bottom of the fifth Youngblood blasted a two run no-doubter to right. The homer, his second of the day, also marked the sophomore's 100th career hit.

From there, the Pioneer bullpen locked down to protect the lead. Matt Armstrong threw 3.2 huge scoreless innings out of the pen, striking out four, and only allowing two baserunners. Transy tacked on more insurance runs including an electric triple from Walter Munday, to go up 9-5. In the eighth, Youngblood continued to show no mercy, connecting on another home run to right, his third of the game. The sophomore outfielder finished the game with 6 RBI. Armstrong and the Pioneers took care of business in the late innings, as Transylvania won 11-5.

The two big wins wrap up a busy week for the Pioneers, who now look ahead to next Wednesday, March 23, for a game against Spalding University in Richmond at Earle Combs Stadium. They then travel next weekend for a series against Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
