Transylvania baseball hit 3 homers but lose to Spalding in high scoring affair

Richmond, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team continued its' strong display of power at the plate, but lost a high scoring game against the Spalding University Golden Eagles at Earle Combs Stadium in Richmond on Wednesday night.

After starter Jake Schmidt retired the side in the top of the first, the Pioneers jumped out in the bottom of the inning, starting with a triple from Austin Taylor. A Trent Youngblood double was more than enough to plate Taylor, and TJ Keck lifted one out to right center for a three-run homer, giving Transy an early 4-0 lead.

In the top of the second, three RBI singles from the Golden Eagles proved part of a big inning, as they tied the game right back at 4-4. Transylvania came up empty in the bottom of the second, but bounced back in the third with more power on display. Trent Pahl blasted one out into the night for a two-run shot, as the Pioneers led 6-4.

Unfortunately for Transylvania, the Golden Eagles responded with a massive fourth inning in which they plated 8 runs to take a 12-6 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers were down two outs but suddenly found life. Pahl came up with a big two strike single to drive in one, and just one pitch later Walter Munday hit a towering blast that was a no-doubter the moment it left the bat, making the deficit just 3 runs.

Yet again, the Golden Eagles quickly found more offense in the sixth, as they tacked on 6 more to take control, ahead 18-9. They found another run in the seventh, and were able to keep Transy off the board from there, taking the game in a 7-inning final score of 19-9.

The Pioneers travel to Granville, Ohio this weekend for a three-game series against Denison University, before their next game in Richmond next Wednesday, March 30, against Centre College with a 7:00 PM scheduled first pitch.
