Transylvania baseball grab two wins in doubleheader against Bluffton

Richmond, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team went 2-0 in a doubleheader sweep against the Bluffton University Beavers at Earle Combs Stadium in Richmond on Sunday, winning game one 3-1, and game two 6-2.

In game one, Connor Arnold took the mound for the Pioneers and was in rhythm from the beginning, as he did not allow a single baserunner until a two out walk in the sixth. Meanwhile, Transylvania's offense came to life in the bottom of the second as a leadoff double from Trent Pahl set the table. Walter Munday drove him in right away with a single to make it a 1-0 game. With Arnold cruising along in the afternoon, Transy tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a double from Calvin Schubert. In the seventh Bluffton finally broke through and scored one, but the Pioneer bullpen trio of Ty Conner, Matt Armstrong, and Kaden Hill locked the game down and Hill earned the save as Transy won 3-1.

Arnold took the win after going 6.2 innings allowing just a single hit and an unearned run, with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks allowed.

In game two, Robby Arnett got the start on the hill and got through the top of the first, and the Pioneers quickly got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a Pahl single that scored two. Arnett pitched a strong second but the Beavers plated two in the third to tie the game, prompting a pitching change to Max Medley, who got out of the jam. In the bottom of the third Transy took the lead right back, scoring one on an error and another on a Munday RBI single. From there, Jake Schmidt took over pitching and threw 3.2 big scoreless innings, with 5 strikeouts, to protect the 4-2 lead.

Transylvania got big insurance runs in the seventh as Trent Pahl ripped a triple to right center, sending home Griffin Hall and Youngblood who came all the way from first base. Much like in game one, the Pioneer bullpen was sharp and efficient putting up zeros on the board, and Transy took game two by a 6-2 score, with Medley earning the win.

With the two big conference wins in the bag, the Pioneers are right back at it on Tuesday, with a doubleheader at Earlham in Richmond, Indiana with a 5 & 8 PM scheduled start.
