Transylvania baseball go 1-1 in doubleheader at Mount St Joseph Tuesday night

Cincinnati, Oh. – The Transylvania baseball team took a split in a doubleheader against Mount St. Joseph, starting with a decisive win in game one, 14-2. The Pioneers then pulled off a big comeback, but ended up losing game two 10-9, to wrap up Tuesday night.

In game one, Transylvania scored twice in the top of the first with savvy baserunning, as Calvin Schubert stole home while Trent Youngblood stole second base. Youngblood then took off to steal third, and scored on a throwing error. The Lions scored once in the bottom of the first, but from there Preston Davis settled down on the hill and cruised through the rest of the evening.

The Pioneers put up four more in the third with a Schubert triple and a 2 RBI single from TJ Keck, going up 6-1. In the fifth Walter Munday went opposite field with a two-run shot, and Matt Broadwater also drove in a run as the Pioneers were ahead 9-1. A Keck sac fly led to two more runs in the sixth, and Transy kept rolling in the eighth, building a 13-1 lead. Mount St. Joseph scored one in the bottom of the eighth, but a Youngblood RBI double put the hammer down in the ninth, as Transy won the first game 14-2.

First year pitcher Preston Davis took the win and moved to 2-0 after 6.0 strong innings of one run ball. Quinn Bowring, Griffin Hall, and Youngblood each pitched scoreless innings from the pen to wrap up the game.

In game two, Lee Watson got the start on the mound for the Pios and got through the first two innings scoreless, but the Lions soon got going and put up 8 total runs in a three-inning span, taking an 8-0 lead into the sixth. Transylvania fought back scoring three in the sixth from RBI singles from Trent Pahl and Munday, making it an 8-3 game. Caleb Adams pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth, and in the top of the seventh Transy had more in store. Schubert tripled to score two, and Youngblood doubled as part of a huge inning. Keck and Brennan Perry drove in three more and suddenly the Pioneers were ahead, 9-8.

Unfortunately for Transylvania, Mount St. Joseph bounced back in the bottom of the seventh with two runs to take the lead back, and the Pioneers were unable to find the tying run. Despite the impressive comeback, they ended up losing the chaotic back and forth game 10-9.

Up next for Transy comes another conference doubleheader, against Bluffton on Saturday, April 9, at Earle Combs Stadium in Richmond with a 12 & 3 PM scheduled start.
