Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball concludes round robin coming out as the weekend victor

Our Pioneers were home today as they completed the round robin between Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Depauw. We left off with a sweep of these two teams yesterday and today the Pioneers looked to repeat that action. Today was a cold and wet one here in Lexington Kentucky as Wild Health Field provided a distraction from the elements. Transy split today losing the first game against Oshkosh 4-11 then bouncing back against Depauw defeating them 9-1.

The first game for the Pioneers against Wisconsin Oshkosh where scoring for the Pios was our main trouble. Luke Patton was our starting pitcher getting us 5 innings in before retiring with 4 strikeouts but allowing Oshkosh to take advantage in the game. In the 5th inning Bryce Dreher tripled out to center before being sent home by Riley Hill who picked up an RBI by grounding out to the shortstop. Austin Taylor also scored for the Pioneers with his ability to get on base he was sent home from a Henry Mitcham double.

The rest of this game didn't go in the Pios favor as they held firm only letting up one run at a time then slowly getting broken down throughout the game allowing Oshkosh to extend their lead. We ended the 9th inning scoring 2 runs bringing our total to 4 runs. These 2 runs came from an absolute bomb by Joshua Cain as his home run sent himself and Houston Manning home to earn the 2RBI home run.

The second game for the Pioneers was a lot different with pace of play picking up with Jacob Moberly starting on the mound for the Bats. Moberly had a great game facing 23 batters and only letting up 1 run on 4 hits in 6 innings. Depauw struck first against the Pios which shook some life into our team not looking to have the same result as last game. The first run for Transy in this game came from Trent Youngblood who was put in scoring position after he got on first then stole until he reached 3rd. He was sent home by an errant throw following Henry Mitchams at bat.

From then on the flood gates were open as errors made by Depauw quickly caught up to them as Transy had the bases loaded in the 5th but wasn't able to get everyone in. However they scored 2 runs on great base running after Youngblood put the ball in play combined with aggressive base running signaled by Zack Getsee. This extended our lead and with Matt Armstrong finishing the game from the mound he struck out 5 players while only giving up 1 hit showing everyone his closing ability. Before the game ended Transy was able to score 6 more runs through methodical base running and batting placement to shake the Depauw fielding.

After the game head coach Zack Getsee had this to say: "Moberly was awesome today in game 2. He gave our offense a chance to come alive. Always happy when we take 3 out of 4 on a 4 game weekend from teams of that caliber."

Next for the Pioneers is an away trip to Maryville TN where the Pios and the Scots will play at 3PM on the 15th. The Pioneers have played extremely well so far this season and the competition that the boys have played and will continue to play is invaluable experience.
