Transy Men's Tennis battles with Hanover as top two in the HCAC

3/26/2023 8:06:00 PM

Box Score In a battle between the teams picked first and second in the HCAC preseason coaches poll, Hanover
defended their slot by defeating the visiting Transy Pioneers 5-4 on Sunday.
The Pioneers started slowly in doubles, with Jordan Cordrey and Alejandro Perez Canedo dropping an 8-
1 decision at #2. Eli Skaggs and Jared Wells couldn't pull out a close match, losing 8-6 at #3, to give the
Panthers a 2-0 lead. Arjun Gupta and Chris Kaufmann narrowed the gap going into singles by winning
their #1 doubles match 8-6.
Singles went well for Transy at the start. Kaufmann evened the score with a resounding 6-1, 6-1 victory
at #1, and Skaggs followed closely behind with a 6-2, 7-5 win at #4 to give Transy their first lead of the
day at 3-2. Perez Canedo and Cordrey both fell on the losing side of close matches at #3 and #5,
respectively, to give Hanover a 4-3 lead and put them one match from a victory.
Gupta, at #2 singles, and Wells, at #6, both found themselves in a third set after splitting the first two.
Wells responded to losing the first set by winning the second in a tiebreak, while Gupta won his first set
and dropped the second. With all eyes on the two third sets as they decided the match, Gupta came up
short, 6-4 in the third set, to clinch the match for Hanover. The match at #6 singles was finished, with
Wells again finding himself in a tiebreak to decide a set. Just as he did in his second set, he won the final
set tiebreak and the match to make the final score 5-4 in favor of Hanover.
With the loss the Pioneers drop to 3-9 on the season, and 0-1 in HCAC matches. Transy will be in action
again on Saturday, April 1 at 11:00 AM as they welcome Franklin to Top Seed Tennis Club for another
HCAC contest.
