Game Recap: Baseball |

Pioneers win a tight midweek game against Spalding, 4-2 final

The Pioneers pulled out a win in a tight, well played midweek game against Spalding
that featured tremendous defensive and pitching contributions.

Matthew Armstrong toed the rubber for his 2 nd start of the season. He went six
innings, giving up five hits, two walks, five strikeouts. He surrendered only one run; it was
earned. Spalding struck first in the top of the 3 rd inning, but Transy answered back with
single runs in both the third and the fourth inning.

In the third inning, Braden Becker led off with a double and was promptly brought
in by a double from Trent Pahl to tie the game. In the fourth inning, Zach Forner worked a
one out walk and was advanced to 3 rd by Walter Munday. With two outs, Caleb Bowers
doubled on the first pitch of his at-bat to score Forner.

The Pioneers ran into some trouble in the 7 th inning, but Gabe Dillard worked his
way out of a bases loaded jam while only surrendering one run to leave the game tied.
Kaden Hill relieved Dillard in the 8 th and promptly dispatched the Golden Eagle hitters. He
faced three batters and struck out two.

The stage was set for the Pioneers to score two in the bottom of the 8 th . Bryce Dreher
forced the defense's hand by reaching base on an error by the shortstop. Calvin Schubert
singled on a bunt to first base and Henry Mitcham sacrificed the runners to 2 nd and 3 rd .
Austin Taylor's comebacker to the pitcher was botched and the Pioneers had snagged a late
lead.

The cushion was plenty for Josh Furtado as he worked a scoreless 9 th frame to earn
the save. He struck out one.

Coach Getsee had this to say after the game:

"What an awesome baseball game. There were so many tremendous defensive plays
made and the pitching staff was absolutely lights out."

The Pioneers will be on the road for another HCAC weekend at Rose-Hulman with a doubleheader Saturday and finishing the series Sunday.
