Game Recap: Baseball |

Pioneers down the Yellow Jackets in twin billing, 6-1 and 9-4

Game 1:

Connor Arnold toed the rubber for game 1 of the series and was remarkably efficient
through the first fiving innings. The 10:00 AM start however provided a bit of a slow start for the
Pioneer bats as they entered the bottom of the 6 th down 1-0.

The sixth inning outburst however was more than enough for the Pioneers to win the ball
game. Henry Mitcham singled home Bryce Dreher before Austin Taylor followed with a single of his
own to score Mitcham. After Walter Munday worked a walk, Houston Manning delivered his first
career cap the scoring in the inning at 5-1. Mitcham tacked on another run in the 7 th via a home run
as well for good measure.

The story of the game however was the combination of Connor Arnold and Brennan Perry
on the mound. Arnold went five innings while giving up 3 hits, striking out three, and surrendering
one run. Perry shut the door however with four innings of scoreless ball to earn the win. Of note
however, the Pioneers turned a triple play in the top of the 8 th inning. Austin Taylor picked up a
ground ball to his right, stepped on third and delivered a strike to Henry Mitcham covering second
who did the same to get the ball to Houston Manning in time for three outs.

Game 2:

The second game of the doubleheader was a much different start for the Pioneers
offensively. The hitters came out of the gate swinging by putting up six runs across the first two
frames. Trent Youngblood led of the game with a double to left center and Mitcham doubled him
home for the Pioneers to jump out to a 1-0 lead and, once again, Austin Taylor followed with a
double of his own.

In the second inning, Manning, Munday, and Becker all reached base to lead off the frame
and an error and a balk pushed another run across the plate. Calvin Schubert capped the scoring in
the frame with a single to centerfield to score two more.

Much like the first game of the day, the crooked number was enough for starter Jacob
Moberly. He was masterful across eight innings. He struck out seven while only giving up six hits.

Coach Getsee had this to say after the game:

"We're really happy to pull both those out today. Defiance always plays us tough and the Nies kid
has always thrown really well against us."
