LEXINGTON, KY - Transylvania University defeated Earlham College on Wednesday, earning their eighth straight victory and their sixth consecutive HCAC win.Â
The Pioneers opened the first set with their offense on full display, featuring five kills in the opening run from
Cate Scheper,
Clara Rogers,
Addie Atcher,
Cecilia Roberts and
Grace Ward. Earlham would respond, initiating a series of short runs from each team.
Kayden Holcomb's kill would give Transy a 20-13 advantage that they would maintain. Atcher scoring the final point of the opening set, securing a 25-16 opening set win.Â
The second set would see a much more competitive exchange, with both teams struggling to extend their lead. Transy would find their first extended run of the set with a 9-1 sequence to take a 16-12 lead. The second set featured an impressive defensive block from Rogers and Roberts, followed by two more kills from Holcomb. Scheper would secure the victory with her eighth kill of the set, 25-22.Â
In the third set, Transy would use a series of runs to build an early lead that they would never surrender. Atcher's five kills and Scheper's seven, including the final two points of the set, would lead Transy's offense, to secure a 25-14 win and a 3-0 victory for the Pioneers.Â
Grace Ward added 44 assists in the victory, continuing her impressive offensive play after being named HCAC Offensive Athlete of the Week on Monday.Â
Head Coach Amy Barmore noted several season high performances in the win.
"
Cate Scheper had a season high of 20 kills, hitting .390 and
Grace Ward had a season high of 44 assists in the three set match," Barmore said. "Our ball control was on tonight and we were able to deliver the ball to our middles who added an additional 15Â kills combined.
Ava Beltsos added two aces and went on a serving run in the second set to get us back on top, she also added 14 digs. I am proud of our performance against a good offensive Earlham team. We have a big match against Manchester on Saturday and we're back in the gym to prepare."
