The Transy Men's Tennis team opened their dual match season with two HCAC matchups, both held at Grizzly Park on Franklin College's campus. The Pioneers served their way to two victories, defeating Franklin College 5-2 and Manchester University 7-0.
The morning match against Franklin was Transy's first experience with new ITA scoring rules. Beginning this season dual matches will be best of seven points, with the three doubles contests counting for one point. The doubles matches have also been shortened to a 6 game set. The Pioneers were able to sweep the three contests, with Chris Kaufmann/Jackson Fischer winning 6-4 at #1, Jordan Cordrey/Jacob Jiranek winning 6-3 at #2, and Alejandro Perez-Canedo/Chase Moreman closing a 6-2 victory on court #3.
The singles matches started strong for the visiting team, with 4 of the first 6 sets going to Transy. Each of those ultimately led to victories. Fischer at #2 was the first to finish with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Jiranek finished close behind, putting Transy one court away from a victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #5. Ravi Tedeschi then closed the door on the dual match when he provided the fourth point of the dual match, a 6-4, 7-5 win at #3.
The remainder of the matches were played to completion. Kaufmann fought through a 7-6, 6-2 win at #1. Cordrey (#6) and Perez-Canedo (#4) were both defeated to provide the final 5-2 margin.
Transy jumped out quickly in the afternoon match. The Pioneers played the same doubles lineup and again swept all three doubles matches, dropping only three games between the three contests. The singles matches were more of the same, and Moreman gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at #5. Jacob Jiranek finished second after a 6-2, 6-0 win at #4. Ravi Tedeschi again clinched the dual match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #2.
The remaining matches were again played out and Transy emerged with wins in all three. Perez-Canedo won 6-2, 6-1 at #3 followed by Fischer's 6-2, 6-1 win at #1. Tobias Mandeville ended the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #6.
"Today was a great introduction to college tennis for the three first year players in our lineups today," said Head Coach Kevin Calhoun. "As a group they played confidently and were resilient when there was adversity. This is a great step forward for our group as we finish the fall season next weekend."
