Men's lacrosse battle Sewanee in 2024 season opener

Box Score SEWANEE, TN- The Transylvania Men's Lacrosse team was back in action for their 2024 season. Transy comes into the season a part of the Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) where the finished pre season #1. On the road against Sewanee University the Pioneers came up short, losing the season opener 7-11. 

The Pioneers would start the game with freshman Ben Pund in the cage where he would set his career high at 14 saves. The Pioneers would lead in assists 5-4 this game while completing 26 clears and winning 10 faceoffs on the day.

The Pioneers would score their first goal of the season with 5:07 to go in the first. Freshman Josh Harney would score his first goal of his career today receiving an assist from Ryan Geisler. This would be the only score of the first quarter for the Pioneers as the quarter would end 1-4.

The Pioneers would start the second quarter energetic with a goal coming with 12:52 left on the clock as freshman Andrew Welch would score his first career goal after receiving an assist from Alex Madson. The Pioneers would double up scoring their 3rd goal of the day with 11:21 left in the half as Casey Fagan would score from another assist by Alex Madson. The Pioneers would end the half on a positive as Samuel Archer would score with 2:04 left to go and send the Pioneers into halftime down 4-7.

The Pioneers had a strong second half despite playing from behind, with 8:10 to go in the 3rd, freshman  Luke Larish would score his first career goal, assisted by Josh Harney who would earn his first career assist. Freshman Briggs Beck would have a great first game from the face off as he would win the majority sitting at 7-13 on the day. 

In the fourth, Casey Fagan would secure his hat trick, scoring his second by himself with 9:56 left in the quarter. Fagan would secure his third goal with 1:15 left in the game after receiving the assist from Andrew Welch, as Welch would earn his first career assist. 

After the game head coach Logan Otto had this to say:
"Today was a tough battle and we knew it would be one against a team like Sewanee. We have a ton of positives to build off of and we are going to learn a lot from this game."

The Pioneers will be back in action February 17th at Kenyon College, Saturday 1PM.
