LEXINGTON - The Transylvania University Men's Tennis team avenged a 6-3 loss to Greenville University in 2023 by posting an 8-1 victory at Top Seed Tennis Club today. The win moves the Pioneers to 4-1 on the season.
The Pioneers struck quickly at the start of the match, winning doubles matches at #1 and #3 in under 35 minutes. The team of Chris Kaufmann/Arjun Gupta posted an 8-2 win at #1, while Jacob Jiranek and Jared Wells won 8-4 at #3. The Panthers would strike back with an 8-5 win at #2 over Jordan Cordrey and Eli Skaggs to cut the Pioneers' lead to 2-1 heading into the singles matches.
The home team struck quickly in the singles as well. Court 6 was the first to finish, as Jordan Cordrey won 6-1, 6-2 to make the lead 3-1. Arjun Gupta quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #2 singles to put the Pioneers within one match of a victory.
That clinching victory came courtesy of Eli Skaggs at #3. His come from behind 2-6, 7-5, 1-0(1) win gave Transy an insurmountable 5-1 lead. The remaining matches were played out, and Chris Kaufmann won 6-4, 7-5 at #1. Alejandro Perez-Canedo (#4) and Jacob Jiranek (#5) found themselves in third set tiebreaks to determine their results. Perez-Canedo posted a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(7) win and was closely followed by Jiranek's 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(7) win. The singles sweep made the final score 8-1 in favor of the Pioneers.
Head Coach Kevin Calhoun was very happy with the match. "This is the most complete match I have been a part of at Transy. Each of the nine courts was engaged, disciplined, and positive. This was a true team win and we look forward to more great competition this weekend."

The team is in action again Saturday afternoon when they take on Piedmont at Top Seed Tennis Club. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
