LEXINGTON - The Transylvania Baseball team opened up Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Legends Stadium. Transylvania (12-3) took on Hanover (9-5) in a doubleheader to begin conference action. The Pioneers and Panthers split on the day to move to 1-1 in the HCAC.
Game 1: Transy 4, Hanover 10
Transylvania scored first in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by
Calvin Schubert. Hanover would respond with an RBI single in the fourth, but would lose the lead after
Henry Mitcham hit an RBI groundout to score
Trent Youngblood to take a 2-1 lead.
Hanover would score the game's next nine runs, with two coming in the seventh and seven coming in the ninth inning. The Panthers strung together five ninth innings hits while taking advantage of errors by the Pioneer defense.
Transylvania scored two in the ninth of a throwing error by the Panthers, but would eventually fall 4-10 in game one.
Game 2: Transy 3, Hanover 2
The Pioneers scored their lowest amount of runs this season in the one run victory.
Jacob Moberly improved to 3-0 on the season after pitching seven innings deep while striking out four batters.
Camryn Warfield pitched one inning in relief and struck out two batters.
Matt Armstrong earned his fifth save of the season after keeping the Panthers off the board in the ninth.
Trent Youngblood and
Austin Taylor were the only Pioneers to get a hit in the win. Youngblood became the program's all time doubles leader with his eighth double of the season and his fourty-eighth career double. Both Youngblood and Taylor were 1-4 in game two.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth, Panthers would not score again until the eighth inning. Transylvania scored their first run of the game on an RBI groundout by Taylor, and would make it a 3-1 game after the Hanover center fielder dropped a fly ball which brought in two more Transy runners.
Up 3-2 in the top of the ninth,
Calvin Schubert played hero for Transy. After a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt advanced the tying runner to second, Schubert threw out the tying run at the plate on a single to centerfield, just barely getting the out to keep the Panthers off the board in the ninth. The next batter flew out to right field to give Transy the split on the day.
Up next: At 13-4, 1-1, Transy heads to North Manchester, Indiana to face Manchester University in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. For pitch is set for 1 PM.
