LEXINGTON - The red hot Transylvania Pioneers baseball team remained hot after downing Franklin College in a Saturday doubleheader to extend their win streak to 11 games. The Pioneers won a close game one matchup 7-6 before taking down the Grizzlies in 7 innings in game two, 14-4.
Game one: Transy 7, Franklin 6
Camryn Warfield earned his 3rd win of the season after coming in relief for
Luke Patton (6.0 innings, 9 K's, 5 ER's). He allowed no runs in 2 innings of work while striking out 2 batters.
Matt Armstrong earned his 8th save of the season.
The Pioneers gave up 3 runs in the 3rd, but responded with 4 runs right away.
Trent Youngblood doubled to the right center gap to
Trent Pahl, and both him and
Calvin Schubert scored after
Henry Mitcham singled to centerfield a batter later. With runners on second and third,
Chase Gartner grounded out to the first basemen to score Mitcham to give TU the lead.
Schubert's second hit in as many innings was a big one. He hit a solo home run to extend the Pioneer lead to 5-3. Franklin tied the game at 5-5 in the 5th inning with a bases loaded single that scored a pair of runs. In the bottom of the 6th,
Chase Gartner put the Pioneers back on top with an RBI double down the right field line to score
Walter Munday from first.
Franklin would tie the game at 6-6 with a solo home run to left center. After two scoreless innings from both teams,
Trent Pahl broke the 6-6 tie with a home run of his own, a blast to left center to give Transy the 7-6 lead.
Armstrong retired the Grizzlies in order in the 9th to secure the big HCAC win.
Pahl, Youngblood, and Schubert all finished with multiple hits. Mitcham and Gartner both led the team with 2 RBI's.
Game two: Transy 14, Franklin 4
The Pioneers won their 29th game of the season and remained tied for 1st place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings at 15-3 after a 10 run thumping of Franklin.
Connor Arnold earned his 3rd win of the season after getting the nod on the bump in game two. He went 6 innings, striking out 8 batters while allowing just 1 earned run.
The Pioneers plated two runs in the first on an error by the Franklin second basemen and a single to right field by
Walter Munday. Franklin took the lead two innings later after a home run in the 2nd inning and errors on a pickoff that scored the Grizzlies' runners from first and second base.
The bats continued to stay hot throughout the game, as the 2-3 deficit was quickly turned into a 4-3 Transy lead after back-to-back-to-back doubles by Schubert, Youngblood, and Mitcham.
Walter Munday gave Transy the 5-3 lead with a sacrifice fly that scored Mitcham.
In the 4th,
Trent Pahl homered to left center to extend the lead to 7-3, and
Austin Taylor made it an 8-3 game either way a single to left field. TU reached double digits in the 5th as Schubert doubled to score Pahl and
Bryce Dreher.
After a Franklin home run, Transylvania scored 4 runs in the 7th inning to mercy rule the Grizzlies.
Trent Pahl homered for the second time in the game to extend the lead back to 7 runs, and back-to-back-to-back doubles by Schubert, Youngblood, and Mitcham again brought in 2 more runs.
Austin Taylor ended the game early with an RBI single to left field to score Mitcham and give Transy the mercy rule win.
Calvin Schubert had a career high 5 hits in the game two win. He was 5-5 with 2 RBI's and 3 doubles.
Trent Pahl led Transy with 3 RBI's. He earned his first career multi-homerun game.
The Pioneers continue to roll in the month of April. TU has won their last 11 games and finish the month of April out tomorrow on the road at Webster University. TU will look to earn their 30th win of the season for the 2nd time in 4 years. The last time the Pioneers won 30 games or more in a season was in 2021 when they won the HCAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships.
Up next: After a 3 PM first pitch tomorrow, Transy will hit the road for the final time next weekend at Earlham before finishing the regular season at home against Mount St. Joseph.
