Transylvania's Rally Runs Out Of Time

LEXINGTON, KY - Transylvania's fourth quarter rally ran out of time in the final seconds in the opening game of the 2025 Pat Deacon Classic at the Clive M. Beck Center Saturday, falling to Maryville 48-45. 

Maryville opened on a 9-3 run to start the first quarter. Hannah Glisson scored a lay up at the basket in the final seconds of the quarter to trim the deficit to three. Reagan Barrett scored on a jumper for the first field goal of the second quarter, pulling the Pioneers to within one. After a four point run for Maryville, Sierra Kemelgor knocked down a three-pointer to keep the deficit at two for the Pioneers. Maryville would respond with a 9-0 run to put Transylvania in a double digit deficit. Mackenzie Lombardi would knock down two free throws in the final seconds of the half, giving the Pioneers a nine point deficit as they entered the break. 

Maryville opened the second half on a 6-0 run, broken up by a lay up from Barrett. Kemelgor scored on consecutive drives to cut the lead to 12 as the Pioneers began to rally. After multiple successful trips to the free-throw line, the Pioneers ended the third quarter trailing 36-29. Maryville opened the fourth with a jumper and a three-pointer to push their advantage back to double digits, but Transylvania would begin to put together their rally. Kemelgor scored the next two Pioneer field goals, followed by a three-pointer from Lombardi to pull Transylvania back to within four. On the next possession, Kemelgor forced a turnover that led to a fastbreak lay up for Lombardi. On the next possession, Keaton Hall forced a turnover to lead to another fastbreak lay up for Lombardi that tied the game at 41-41. With less than a minute remaining and trailing by one, Transylvania took their first lead of the second half courtesy of another three-pointer from Lombardi, but the Scots would respond with a three-pointer of their own to retake the lead. Kemelgor would knock down a free-throw to pull the Pioneers to within one, but the Scots would take the victory after a successful trip to the line on the next possession, 48-45. 

Sierra Kemelgor led the Pioneers with 16 points and six rebounds. Mackenzie Lombardi followed with 13 points. 

Transylvania returns to action on Sunday in the second day of the Pat Deacon Classic, taking on Asbury at 3:00 p.m.
