Franklin Defeats Pioneers In Overtime Thriller

FRANKLIN, IN - Transylvania ran out of time in the final seconds of an overtime match up on the road at Franklin, 76-73. 

Transylvania came out to a hot start offensively, outscoring Franklin 18-11 in the opening quarter. Sierra Kemelgor scored consecutive three-point field goals to start the offense for the Pioneers, giving Transylvania an early 7-6 advantage. Makya Grinter scored at the basket and a three-pointer in the final minutes of the first, giving the Pioneers an 18-11 advantage entering the second. Franklin responded in the second quarter, outscoring Transylvania 23-17 in the period. In the final three minutes of the first half, Keaton Hall scored a three-pointer, followed by a lay-up and three from Kemelgor in the final minute. Transylvania carried a 35-34 lead into the halftime break. 

Raegan Barrett opened the third quarter with a basket to give the Pioneers a three point lead. After a Franklin basket, Riley Flinn quickly tied things up with a three-pointer. Barrett scored again to close the third quarter, as Franklin carried a one point lead into the fourth. Franklin would score to open the fourth quarter, but Flinn would score another three to keep the Pioneers within two. WIth just over three minutes remaining, Keaton Hall would score four consecutive points to take a one point advantage for the Pioneers, Franklin would respond on the next trip down the floor to retake the lead. Barrett would again find a critical basket for Transylvania in the closing moments of the fourth, scoring a three-pointer to tie the game and force the overtime in the final seconds of regulation. 

Barrett scored the first four points of the overtime period for Transylvania, but the Pioneers would find themselves down two with one minute remaining. Kemelgor would be fouled on a shot attempt, and tie the score for Transylvania at the free-throw line. Franklin would retake the lead with eleven seconds remaining, ultimately taking the 76-73 win. 

Kemelgor led the way for the Pioneers with 27 points, followed by 17 from Barrett and 13 from Flinn. 

Transylvania returns to action on Saturday, January 17th at the Clive M. Beck Center, as they host Manchester at 1:00 p.m.
