LEXINGTON, KY - Transylvania split a double header on Saturday afternoon with Mount St. Joseph at John and Donna Hall Field on Saturday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) competition.
The Pioneers won the first game in thrilling fashion. Transylvania battled back and forth before walking it off in the seventh inning.
Avery Parsons delivered the game-winning swing with a solo home run to break a 4–4 tie and secure the victory.
Transylvania answered an early run in the first inning as Parsons doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Emilie Young. After Mount St. Joseph regained the lead, the Pioneers responded in the third inning, scoring twice on a Mount St. Joseph error to even the game at 3–3.
The Lions took a 4–3 lead in the fourth, but Transylvania answered again in the fifth as Parsons tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ella Steczynski to tie the game.
Parsons led the offense with a standout performance, going 3-for-3 with a double, triple, home run, and two RBI while scoring four runs. Steczynski added two hits and an RBI, while Emily Shearer, Taylor Ingram, and Malana Hamm each recorded a hit.
In the circle, Raegan Gibson earned the win, allowing four runs over 3.1 innings. Natalie Contreras delivered a strong relief outing, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings to keep the game within reach.
Transylvania fell in the second game 8-3 after the Lions scored six runs in the top of the seventh, breaking a 2-2 tie that both teams carried into the final inning. Avery Parsons scored the opening run to give the Pioneers the 1-0 lead in the first inning, while Ella Steczynski scored the second run courtesy of an Emilie Young single to center field in the fifth. Malana Hamm scored the final run in the seventh, but the Pioneers were unable to rally the remainder of the inning.Â
The Pioneers improve to 22-6 on the season, and 6-2 in HCAC play. Transylvania returns to action on Saturday, April 18th, traveling to take on Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute.Â
