Box Score 2 LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior
Drew Zuckerman keyed a 13-hit Transylvania attack with a three-run homer and a triple Sunday, lifting the Pioneers to a 7-5 win over DePauw in the season-opener at St. Xavier High School.
The second game of the doubleheader was delayed by rain with two out in the top of the fifth and DePauw went on to win, 7-1, rallying for seven runs in the last five innings.
In the first game, Transy (1-1) spotted DePauw (2-3) a 1-0 lead in the second inning before taking control with two runs in the third, another in the fourth, and four in the fifth, which included Zuckerman's blast.
Pioneers' starter
Taylor Bugh (1-0) made the most of the scoring barrage, going 6-and-one-third innings and allowing eight hits and one earned run. He fanned five and walked one.
Chris Bloch pitched two innings of two-run ball and
Danny Niehaus got the last two outs, putting out a Tigers' rally in the ninth to get his first save.
Zuckerman also added a triple to the attack and Elliott Desilets contributed hits, including a double, one run and one RBI to the attack.
In the second game, Transy took a 1-0 lead into the fifth on an RBI ground out by
Evan Rhea. DePauw came back after the rain delay to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth, then scored single runs in the sixth and seventh and three more in the eighth.
Thomas Tolliver had three hits for the Pioneers and
Ben Kuebbing added a pair of safeties, including a double.
Jordan Besecker (0-1) took the loss, going six innings and permitting three runs on six hits.
Shelby Dixon,
Ryan James, and
Chad Warner each had an inning in relief.
Transy returns to action on Saturday, hosting Oberlin in a doubleheader at Marquard Field. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
