Transy splits doubleheader with Rose-Hulman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Thomas Tolliver (Wurtland, Ky.) and John Doering (Newport Coast, Calif.) cracked successive two-out doubles in the eighth inning Saturday, lifting Transylvania to a 6-5 win over Rose-Hulman in the first game of a Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader.

Rose-Hulman rebounded from a 5-2 deficit in the second game, pushing home the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh, to win 6-5 and split the doubleheader.

The Pioneers are 16-7, 7-4 HCAC, while the Engineers are 19-9, 9-4 HCAC.

In the opener, Tolliver and Doering's hits made a winner of relief pitcher Chad Warner (Lexington, Ky.) (3-0), who took over for starter Chris Bloch (Louisville, Ky.) with one out in the sixth. He pitched through the seventh, giving up just one hit and one walk. Danny Niehaus (Villa Hills, Ky.) got the save, his sixth, with a 1-2-3 eighth.

Ken Riley (Lexington, Ky.) hit a two-run homer in the to key a three-run rally as the Pioneers came back from a 5-2 deficit to send the scheduled seven-inning game to extra innings. Tolliver's RBI single driving in Kameron Mason (Louisville, Ky.), tied the score.

Tolliver finished with four hits and Doering added three. Riley and Johnny Renz (Milford, Ohio) had two hits apiece and Riley finished with three RBI.

In the second game, Transy scored twice in the first and two more times in the third for a 4-2 lead. The Pioneers expanded their advantage to 5-2 with another tally in the fifth before the Engineers put up a three spot in the bottom of the frame.

Rose-Hulman got a two-out double with two on the post the winning run.

Riley had three hits and three RBI for Transy, while Evan Rhea (Louisville, Ky.) and Ben Kuebbing (Burlington, Ky.)each pitched in a pair of hits with Rhea driving home two.

Jordan Beseckeer (Mason, Ohio) started on the mound for the Pioneers. Zach Bynum (Louisville, Ky.) allowed the lead off hitter to reach in the seventh and took the loss when that runner scored off Kuebbing.

The Pioneers will wrap up their three-game series with the Engineers on Sunday with a single game, beginning at noon.
