TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Transylvania defeated Rose-Hulman 7-4 Sunday in the final of a three-game Heartland Conference baseball series.
The Pioneers are 17-7, 8-4 HCAC, while the Engineers are 19-10, 9-5 HCAC as Transy took two in the three-game set.
Transy opened strong in the first inning as an RBI double from
Drew Zuckerman (Lexington, Ky.) scored
John Doering (Newport Coast, Calif.), who had reached on a walk. Later in the inning,
Ken Riley (Lexington, Ky.) would drive in two more runs, giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead after the first half inning. The Pioneers scored one more in the second inning after Zuckerman hit an RBI double scoring
Ryan Troehler (Loveland, Ohio), giving Transy a 4-0 lead.
In the fouth inning, the Pioneers poured on two more runs as Troehler found home plate after a Doering RBI double. Doering scored for the second time after an RBI single by
Ben Kuebbing.
Starting the in the fourth inning, the Engineers scored one run in four consecutive innings. Entering the ninth inning the Pioneers had a 6-4 lead, and scored one more for good measure when Doering reached home on an error.
Taylor Bugh (Louisville, Ky.) picked up his fifth victory of the season after pitching seven complete innings, giving up four runs and striking out four.
Danny Niehaus (Villa Hills, Ky.) earned his seventh save of the season after pitching the ninth, striking out one.
Transy is back in action on Friday when it opens a three-game HCAC series with Defiance with a single game at 4:30 p.m.
