WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Transylvania freshman right-hander
Matt Morgan allowed just two earned runs over six innings Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to prevent Webster from taking a 4-2 decision over the Pioneers at Chain of Lakes Park in the Russ Matt Invitational.
The Pioneers are 3-6 while Webster improved its mark to 7-4.
Webster grabbed a 2-0 lead after two innings on a steal of home and a home run. Transy got a run back in the bottom of the third on a lead-off walk by
John Michael Cowley, followed by a triple off the bat of Zach Byum.
Webster countered single runs in the fourth and seventh innings, making it 4-1.
Transy's final run came in the eighth when
Zach Riney doubled with one out and came home when the Webster righfielder mishandled a shot off the bat of
Zach Muench. Transy finished the game with five hits, including a pair from designated hitter
Taylor Bugh.
Morgan went the first six innings and gave up seven hits and three runs, two earned. He had three strikeouts against one walk. He was followed to the mound by
Ryan Troehler and
Elliot Desilets.
Transy is scheduled to play twice in the Invitational on Thursday. The Pioneers will meet Fairleigh Dickinson at 9 a.m. and Framingham at 1 p.m. They conclude the Florida portion of their schedule on Friday with a 10 a.m. contest with Spalding.
