LEXINGTON, Ky. - Seniors
Ken Riley and
Danny Niehaus came through in a big way for Transylvania Tuesday and helped the Pioneers even their Heartland Conference record with a tight 4-3 win over Hanover at Marquard Field.
The Pioneers (7-9, 2-2 HCAC) got a three-run homer from Riley and Niehaus escaped a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the top of the ninth with a pop up and a strike out. The loss was the first for Hanover (13-6, 3-1 HCAC) in conference action.
Zach Riney led off the third with a walk and
Zach Muench followed by being hit by a pitch to set the stage for Riley's first homer of the year, a towering blast to right. Muench's RBI single in the first scored
Zach Bynum, who led off the game with a double. That was all the offense for the Pioneers.
Hanover battled back with three runs in the fifth off Transy starter
Jamie King (1-1). King pitched into the seventh, allowing eight hits and three runs, one earned. He had three strikeouts and no walks.
Shelby Dixon followed and struck all four of the hitters he retired. Niehaus got his second save when he entered the ninth with the tying run on first. He walked two hitters to load the bases, then enduced a pop up to second and a swinging strikeout on a full count.
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Centre for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
