Ken Riley slugged a bases-clearing double Sunday and
Jamie King pitched six strong innings, lifting Transylvania to a 6-4 Heartland Conference win over Rose-Hulman at Marquard Field.
The Pioneers salvaged the last of a three-game set and improved to 16-16 overall, 9-9 in HCAC play. The Engineers are 22-9, 13-4 HCAC.
Rose-Hulman nicked King (3-2) for an unearned run in the first before the Pioneers rallied for five runs in the third. With one out, Transy loaded the bases on a hit by
Zach Bynum and walks to
Zach Bynum and
Graham Winchester. Riley made it 3-0 on an opposite field double to left.
Johnny Renz and
Sam Liggett followed with doubles to make it 5-1.
King allowed five hits and three runs, none earned, with five strikeouts and three walks.
Royce Neeley and
Shelby Dixon combined for two innings of hitless relief and
Danny Niehaus pitched the ninth, getting his fifth save. He ended the game with a double-play ball.
Renz had two doubles and two runs scored for the Pioneers.
Kevin Brinkman had a two-out RBI single in the eighth to score what would prove to be a valuable insurance run when Rose-Hulman scored in the ninth.
Transy will meet HCAC rival Mt. St. Joseph on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Marquard Field.
