BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Transylvania held a 3-2 advantage over Bridgewater in the second half Saturday, but the Pioneers ended up dropping their second match of the season, an 8-4 men's lacrosse decision.
The Pioneers are 0-2 on the young season while Bridgewater is 1-0.
Transy trailed by one goal, 1-0, at the end of the first quarter only to see the home team put up five scores in the second quarter. That left Transy on the short end of a 6-1 halftime score.
But the Pioneers' defense got tougher in the second half. After a scoreless third quarter, Transy had a 3-2 edge over the final 15 minutes.
"That was a huge improvement over our first outing (a 20-1 loss to Berry)," said head coach
Terry Justice. "Our guys just played their hearts out."
Clay Douthat scored the first three collegiate goals of his career. The other Transy score was by
Skyler Moran.
Ben Erwin had the assist on Moran's goal.
Transy will play its first home match in program history, taking on Alma Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Bryan Station High School.
