BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Transylvania opened its season on Saturday with a sweep, knockinng off North Park 5-1 in the first game, then coming back to post a lopsided 16-0 decision over sixth-ranked Birmingham Southern.
Transy moves to 2-0-0 on the year with their first victory while the Vikingsare 0-2.
Zach Bynum had two hits to pace the Pioneers in the first game. Transy answered a one-run sixth inning by North Park with a four-run seventh, sparked by the bat of junior
Zach Riney, who connected up the middle and found a single in a two-out situation.
Nick Edwards was able to send Riney home on the next at bat when he doubled to left-center. The hit parade kept coming as Bynum singled to center and sent home Edwards and
Adam Daniels, who was hit by a pitch. Transy's
Hunter Voshell and
Sam Liggett also snagged singles to score Bynum.
The Pioneers scored another run in the eighth when
Graham Winchester was able to capitalize off his double to right-center.
Transy finished the game with eight hits including two apiece from Bynum and Winchester. North Park tallied only seven hits.
On the mound for the Pioneers for the first contest was sophomore
Matt Morgan, who only gave up two walks and tallied up four strikeouts. Also seeing time on the hill for Transy was senior
Ryan James, who had three strikeouts, and closer
Nick Edwards, who had no walks and one strikeout in his one inning.
Transy took on sixth-ranked Birmingham Southern in a night game Saturday and took a 16-0 seven-inning win behind the shutout pitching of
Shelby Dixon and
Matt Birkenhauer. Dixon went four innings and allowed just one hit, with two strikeouts and five walks. Birkenhauer pitched three shutout innings, permitting no hits and facing the minimum nine batters.
Sam Liggett and
John Michael Cowley each had three hits and combined to have five runs and six RBI.
Zach Bynum and
Nick Edwards each had two hits.
Transy took a 2-0 lead in the first and led 8-0 after four frames. A six-run sixth clinched the issue for Transy.
Transy is back in action on Sunday, taking on Birmingham Southern at 12:30.
