Pioneers hold off Oglethorpe, 9-8

Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. - Transylvania rebounded from a 4-2 first-quarter deficit Tuesday with a four-goal rally and  the Pioneers went on to defeat Oglethorpe 9-8 in men's college lacrosse action.

The Pioneers (4-2) won their fourth match in a row while Oglethorpe falls to 2-6.

After trailing 4-2 after the first 15 minutes, Transy blanked the Stormy Petrels 4-0 in the second quarter for a 6-4 halftime advantage.

Transy had an 8-5 lead heading into the final quarter, then went up 9-5 before the home team scored the final three goals in the last six minutes of play to make the score close.

Clay Douthat had four goals to lead the Pioneers while Ben Erwin added three. Sam Ives and Skyler Moran also had goals for Transy.

Erwin was also credited with two asists. Joshua Slone had 12 saves in goal for Transy, including eight in the second half. 

Transy outshot Oglethorpe 29-25 for the game and had 37 ground balls to 41 for the home team. Transy led in turnovers, 27-25. 

Transy trailed 4-1 late in the first quarter before Douthat's goal with under a minute to play made it 4-2. Moran, Douthan, Erwin, and Ives each scored in the second quarter to put the Pioneers in control.

Transy is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Rhodes for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Lynx.
