FRANKLIN, Ind. - Franklin had an explosive offensive day Saturday, taking Heartland Conference wins over Transylvania by scores of 10-2 and 9-3.
The doubleheader sweep leaves the Pioneers at 17-16, 10-10 in HCAC play, while the Grizzlies are 9-16, 11-9 in league action. Transy is now one game out of the fourth and final spot in the upcoming HCAC Tournament.
In the first game, Franklin led 4-1 after scoring in the top of fourth only to see the home team tally two runs in the bottom of the frame and three more in the sixth. The Grizzlies had 16 hits to six for Transy.
Nick Edwards had two hits and a run for the Pioneers.
Kameron Mason added an RBI single and
Zach Riney scored a run and had a hit.
Jamie King (2-4) went four innings and allowed six runs, three earned. He had two strikeouts and three walks.
Armando Bosch,
Michael Birkenhauer, and
Graham Winchester also pitched in the contest.
The second game was close through the first six innings with Transy tying the game 1-1 in the second and Franklin regaining the lead, 2-1, with a score in the fourth.
But Franklin blew the contest open with four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Again, the home team had a 13-7 edge in hits. The Pioneers rallied for a pair of ninth-inning runs with Mason doubling home a run and
Pete Travisano getting another run home on a ground out to third.
Shelby Dixon (3-2) went the first six innings, permitting eight hits and six runs, four earned, with six strikeouts and one walk. He was followed to the hitt by
Matt Birkenhauer and
Royce Neeley, who combined to allow five hits and three runs.
Mason and Travisano each had doubles for the Pioneers and
Hunter Voshell had a hit and an RBI in the game.
The Pioneers conclude their series with Franklin on Sunday with a single game on Sunday at noon. Transy is back in action on Tuesday, when it travels to Hanover for an HCAC matchup with the Panthers.
