MEMPHIS, Tenn. â€" A lack of cohesive offense downed the Transylvania field hockey team 1-7 Saturday in their first Southern Athletic Association conference game versus the Rhodes Lynx.
"The strategy today was to play our game and string the passes together," said Head Coach Tiffany Underhill. "But ultimately we didn't play well as a unit. We needed to communicate and compete, but got caught on our heels today."
The Lynx came out swinging, peppering the Pioneer net with the first 11 shots of the game. It wasn't until the 20-minute mark that junior
Macaulay Schifferdecker marked the first shot, which sailed wide of the Lynx cage. It was sophomore
Kayla Thurlow who netted the lone Transylvania goal with two seconds remaining in the first half, sending the Pioneers into the half trailing 1-3.
Down at the half, Coach Underhill challenged the team to step up their game offensively, but the Lynx withstood the contest and topped the Pioneers, 1-7 by the end of regulation.
Junior goalkeeper
Sara Aschbacher marked seven saves during her 50-minute run, while sophomore goalkeeper
Katie Jackel made an additional three in the second half. Sophomore
Faye Katz was the only other Pioneer besides Thurlow to notch a shot on goal.
"It's a new day tomorrow," said Coach Underhill. "We need to just flush this game and leave it in Memphis. We'll focus on tomorrow on working together."
The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow, taking on Hendrix College at 1 p.m.
