DANVILLE, Ky. â€" Shifty base running helped boost the Pioneers past Centre College, 7-3, Tuesday at Gary Wright Field.
The Pioneers swiped eight bases in the win and capitalized off nine Centre errors.
Aaron Johnson logged three of Transylvania's 12 hits on the day, while
Zach Bynum and
Nick Edwards both went 2-for-2.
Two runs in the ninth solidified the fourth win of the season, as
Pete Travisano singled to start the inning for Transylvania. Travisano later scored on a single from
Trey Simpson.
Spencer Miller also scored in the inning on a groundball to second base from Johnson.
Transylvania led 1-0 after a Centre error allowed Simpson to reach base in the second inning. Simpson stole second base, putting him in position to score on a fielder's choice from
Gage Beavers.
Mason drove another ground ball, this time allowing
Nick Edwards to plate a run in the third for the Pioneers. A fourth-inning single from
Zach Bynum drove in Johnson, giving the Pioneers a 3-1 advantage.
Transylvania struck again in the seventh when Bynum singled before scoring on a single from Mason. And again, in the eighth, as Johnson scored after
Zach Riney reached on an error allowing both Jones and Johnson to advance.
Tom Banahan was stellar for the Pioneers. Banahan logged four innings on the mound, allowing only one run on one hit.
Jamie King earned the win, finishing one inning with one hit and one strikeout.
The Pioneers hit the road for a three-game weekend series against Berry College (Ga.) The teams will face-off in a Saturday double-header with the final game of the series on Sunday.
Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for noon with the second game to immediately follow. Sunday's first pitch is also scheduled for noon.
