Box Score
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Transylvania women's lacrosse cruised to their second-straight win on Wednesday, toppling the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops, 15-9.
Despite winning the battle in shots, 27 to 25, the Battlng Bishops were outmanned by the Pioneers on the defensive end.
"Our defense kept us in the game and allowed our attack to find their rhythm," said Head Coach Haley Marvine. "We were able to finish with five different goal scorers which made us hard to defend."
The even scoring balance was led by sophomore
Rachel Harrison had a second stand-out game, recording a team-high five goals and eight shots. She was followed by sophomore defender
Sky Spraker, who totaled four goals, seven shots, and six draw controls, giving the team precious possessions that Coach Marvine attributed as the "key to the game."
The contest started off offensively slow, as neither team could convert in the opening eight minutes of play. Within two minutes, and the 22-and 21-minute mark,  two unassisted goals by the Bishops gave the team a quick 2-0 lead.
The competition was all the Pioneers needed to spark their offense, as Harrison and Hendrix netted three-straight goals within three minutes, gaining a one-point advantage, 3-2. The Bishops would return the impact with another goal at the 14:47 mark, but Transylvania would continue to respond. By the end of the first half, the Pioneers would gain an 8-5 cushion heading into halftime.
The second half would follow suit, as another seven would be knocked in out of the pockets of Transylvania players, giving them the 15-9 victory.
Goalkeeper
Lydia Shaughnessy notched 10 saves in the win, making key defensive moves down the stretch.
"Lydia played her best game so far this season and was the spark for our entire defense," said Coach Marvine. "She made some huge saves."
Three additional Pioneers chipped in to record the remainder of the goals on the day, including freshman
Natalie Hendrix (3), sophomore
Molly Kruse (2) and sophomore
Lucy Meredith (1).
Transylvania continues their road trip to face Methodist University on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Fayetteville, N.C.
