LEXINGTON, Ky.â€"Seven Pioneers scored as Transylvania University's women's lacrosse team set a program record with 23 goals in Tuesday's win over Wilmington College.
Five different Pioneers scored four goals in the lopsided 23-5 win, breaking the previous record of 20 goals.
Transylvania controlled the game early, scoring less than 20 seconds into the contest and never looked back.
Sky Spraker scored first for the Pioneers, her first of four goals on the night, on a pass from
Lucy Meredith.
Meredith,
Natalie Hendrix,
Rachel Harrison and
Molly Kruse also had four goals each in the dominating win.
Jessica Bier added two goals and
Taylor Bussell also scored for Transylvania.
The Pioneers added five more goals within ten minutes and held a 6-0 lead with 20:26 left in the first half. Wilmington answered with a man-up goal from Kiki Hall, cutting the Pioneer lead to five. Rachel Gutowski scored for Wilmington less than a minute later. The Quakers were held scoreless from there until the closing minutes of the game.
With a 7-2 lead, the Pioneers scored the next eight goals to close the half. The Pioneers quickly added to their lead to start the second half. Kruse posted her third score of the night with 28:36 left, giving Transylvania a 16-2 lead. Transylvania netted five more goals to go up 21-2, before Wilmington scored three straight. Hendrix and Spraker added their final two goals in the final two minutes to seal the 23-5 win.
The Pioneers ended the game with 28 shots-on-goal and nearly doubled Wilmington in ground balls.Tranyslvania will host Piedmont College Saturday at Transylvania University Athletics Complex. Game time is scheduled for noon.
