LEXINGTON, Ky.â€" A RBI single from
Spencer Miller gave the Pioneers the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to steal a 5-2 win in the finale of a critical Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series Saturday at Marquard Field.
With
Kameron Mason and
Sam Liggett aboard after being hit by a pitch, Miller dug into the box. Miller drove a steady grounder through the gap, scoring Mason and giving the Pioneers a 3-2 lead. After a pitching change by Franklin, a wild pitch snuck by the catcher and allowed
Nick Edwards to score another for Transylvania.
Zach Riney drew a two-out walk to load the bases for centerfielder
Zach Bynum. Bynum sent a shot through the left side of the infield to score Liggett and give the Pioneers a three-run cushion heading into the final inning of play.
The scoreboard showed goose eggs until Franklin scored one run in the top half of the fourth. Transylvania, however, answered and took the lead with two runs in the home half of the inning.
Mason reached on a fielding error from Franklin before
Pete Travisano drew a base on balls putting two on, with no outs for the Pioneers. Edwards laid down a well-executed sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and put them in scoring position.
Liggett drove home Mason on a long, fly ball to center field to give the Pioneers their first run of the game and tying the game at one. Travisano took third on a passed ball and scored when a ball off the bat of Miller was mishandled, giving the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
Jamie King posted a stellar performance on the mound, logging seven strikeouts in just as many innings and holding the Grizzly offense to only two runs.
Trey Simpson relieved King in the seventh, holding Franklin scoreless and earning his first win of the season.
Miller led the Pioneer offense going 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win.
Franklin took down the Pioneers in Saturday's first game, 13-7, after winning the series opener Friday, 9-5.
The Grizzlies jumped ahead 9-0 after plating three in the first inning along with six more in the second.
Transylvania put together three runs in the bottom half of the second, to narrow the gap to 9-3.
Hunter Voshell drove a RBI single to right, and Mason followed with a two-RBI single to center.
After being held scoreless the next two innings, the Pioneers put two more on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a two RBI shot to center from
Zach Riney. After the Grizzlies added a run in the top half of the inning, the Pioneers trailed, 10-5.
Voshell drove in Riney and Edwards on a two RBI single down the line to left field in the seventh for Transylvania's final two runs of the game, trailing 11-7.
Franklin scored two in the top half of the eighth, earning their second win of the series, 13-7.
Voshell went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the loss to lead the Pioneers.
With the win, Transylvania is still in the race for a bid to the HCAC tournament with seven conference games remaining.The Pioneers return to action Wednesday for a conference matchup against College of Mount St. Joseph. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Marquard Field.
