LEXINGTON, Ky.â€"A Pioneer goal less than a minute into play set the tone for the Transylvania women's lacrosse team for a dominating 23-0 win Saturday to conclude the 2014 season.
"It was a great team effort today," Head Coach Haley Marvine said. "We knew Defiance had some great freshmen so we were prepared."
Saturday's shutout was the first in program history for the Pioneers. The Pioneers also matched a game-high in points scored in the victory.
With the win, the Pioneers improved their season to an even 7-7 in just their second season of competition, improving on last season's 5-6 record.
Ten Pioneers scored in the win, as sophomore
Rachel Harrison led Transylvania with six goals of her own. Sophomore
Molly Kruse added five goals, as
Natalie Hendrix and
Jessica Bier netted three goals each. Hendrix also posted four assists in the win.
Taylor Bussell,
Elizabeth Thomas,
Lucy Meredith,
Tessie Mettens,
Aubrey Bausum and
Sky Spraker each added a goal for the Pioneers. Bausum tied a team-high record for assists in a game with five.
The Pioneers were all over the field taking 29 ground balls, while holding Defiance to 14. Transylvania out-shot the Yellow Jackets 29-9 in the lopsided win.
After taking the game's opening draw control, Harrison scooped up a groundball gaining possession for Transylvania. Bausum gained control and found Bier for the game's first goal a mere 24 seconds into the first half.
The Pioneers wasted no time as they quickly held a 2-0 lead just seconds later on a goal from Kruse. The Pioneer offense was unstoppable, as they built a 10-0 with 14:13 still remaining in the first half. But they were not finished. The offense added five more goals before the end of the first half for a 15-0 lead at the break.
The dominance continued in the second half, as the Pioneers added five more goals in the first eight minutes of play. The Pioneers found the goal three more times before the end of regulation to earn their seventh win of the season and improve to an even .500 for the season.
"It was an amazing way to end our second season," Marvine said.
