LEXINGTON, Ky. â€" The Pioneers outscored Sewanee 6-4 in the second half but the Sewanee lead was too much to overcome, as Transylvania fell 18-8 Sunday.
The Tigers netted 14 first half goals, while holding the Pioneers to 2-for-10 shooting.
Natalie Hendrix led the Pioneers with four goals and one assist in the loss, as
Molly Kruse added three goals.
Rachel Harrison also scored for the Pioneers, along with
Aubrey Bausum and
Sky Spraker each finishing with one assist.
Sewanee added to its first half lead less than four minutes into the second half, extending its lead to 15-2. Hendrix scooped up a groundball and found Harrison for a goal at the 22:54 mark to narrow the deficit to 15-3. Less than two minutes later, the Pioneer offense struck again. A ground ball pickup from
Taylor Bussell helped Hendrix to her third goal of the day with 20:42 remaining, but the Pioneers still trailed 15-4.
The Tigers found the goal again, before Spraker connected with Kruse for a Pioneer goal with 15:23 left, following a failed clear attempt by the Lions making it 16-5 in favor of Sewanee.
Transylvania then outscored the Lions 3-2 in the final minutes, as Hendrix scored back-to-back goals just two minutes apart. Kruse added her final goal of the day as time expired, dropping the Pioneers to .500 on the season.
After two quick Sewanee goals to start the game, the Pioneers converted a Sewanee turnover into a goal, capitalizing off a free position goal by Hendrix for her first of three goals on the day. The Pioneers trailed 2-1 with just over six minutes gone in the game.
The Tigers controlled the next 16 minutes, firing nine goals in that span to gain a controlling 11-2 advantage. Kruse stopped the Sewanee streak with a goal at the 5:31 mark in the first half, but the damage was done.
Sewanee won the turnover battle 22-13 for the game and grabbed 39 groundballs, compared to 28 by the Pioneers.
The Pioneers host Mount St. Joseph in the second game of a men's and women's double-header Wednesday at Pat Deacon Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
