Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla.—Transylvania University's softball team dropped its match up against Heidelberg on Saturday by a score of 12-5. After scoring in each of the first three innings, the Pioneers were held scoreless over the final four frames.
Transy got on the board early after a leadoff single from freshman outfielder Lindsey Barton and an RBI double from sophomore infielder Shelby Bailey, but a four run bottom of the first from Heidelberg put the Pioneers behind heading into the second frame.
In the top of the second, senior outfielder Chelsea Pharris hit a long drive over the center field fence for her first home run of the season to draw the Pioneers within two. Junior infielder Jamie Lutes followed her with a single up the middle and junior infielder Katie Hulsman singled to center to put two on with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt, a groundout from Barton brought Lutes in to score and a single from Bailey knocked Hulsman in, the Pioneers evened the score at four.
Transylvania added one in the top of the third to retake the lead, 5-4 after a bases loaded walk from Hulsman scored senior third baseman Elizabeth Young. Heidelberg responded with an explosive bottom of the inning however, scoring eight runs on seven hits and two Transy errors to move back in front, 12-5.
Neither team allowed a run the rest of the game, which ended 12-5 in favor of Heidelberg. At the plate, Pharris and Bailey picked up two hits each while four other Pioneers added one hit of their own. Bailey added two RBIs as the leader for Transy. On the rubber, Lutes allowed eight runs on 13 hits over three innings before Hulsman took over, working three scoreless innings and striking out four.
