Rhodes holds off Pioneers for 9-6 win

Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The home standing Lynx of Rhodes College held off the aggressive attack of the Pioneers to pick up a 9-6 win over Transylvania Monday in the rain.

After the Lynx took a 1-0 lead, the Pioneer offense answered, as sophomore midfielders Zack Riggs and Clark Watts connected at the 12:51 mark to tie the score at one apiece.

The Lynx netted three unanswered goals to go up 4-1 over the Pioneers, as time wound down in the first quarter before Transylvania tallied two goals in just over three minutes to narrow the Rhodes' lead to one, 4-3.

Freshman midfielder Josh Mesmer found the net  following a successful clear after Transylvania goal keeper Cooper Fogle denied the Lynx on three straight shots on goal to help the Pioneers get back to within two. Minutes later, another timely save from Fogle gave the Pioneers another clear attempt that led to a goal from sophomore attacker Zach Roby with only nine seconds remaining in the first quarter shifting the score to 4-3.

Rhodes was able to string together three goals to extend their lead to 7-3 over the Pioneers, before  junior attacker Ben Erwin found junior attacker Clay Douthat for the score with 11:57 left in the first half.

"We lost the second quarter 3-0 and we could not dig ourselves out," head coach Terry Justice said. "We had plenty of opportunities to seize the game but we repeatedly turned the ball over."

The Lynx added to their lead to make it an 8-4 game, before Mesmer added his second score of the night to pull the Pioneers back to within three at 8-5. The Pioneer offense continued to threaten before a man-up goal from Watts on a pass from Mesmer with 3:30 remaining.

The Pioneers won the following face off, but the Pioneers were unable to convert. The Lynx added a late goal with less than two minutes left to play to seal the win.

"We will regroup and go back to work," Justice said.

Transylvania (1-2) takes on Piedmont Wednesday. Wednesday's game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
