Historic season ends for women's lacrosse

LATROBE, Pa.—A historic third season ended on Friday for the Transylvania University women's lacrosse team. The Pioneers, claiming their first postseason berth in program history, fell to St. Vincent College in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference semifinals by a score of 17-9. Transy finished the season with a 6-3 mark in ORLC play to earn entry into the conference tournament.

Transylvania fell behind early in the contest and were unable to overcome the deficit despite a strong second half that saw them outscore St. Vincent 8-7. The Bearcats jumped out to an 8-0 lead with 10:02 to play in the first half. Midfielder Rachel Harrison got the Pioneers into the scoring column with a goal at the 7:13 mark in the opening period. The goal would stand as the lone score for Transy in the first 30 minutes.

Out of the locker room, the Pioneers traded scores with the Bearcats. Harrison got on the board again on a free position shot with 25 minutes to play before attacker Iyabo Erinkitola gave the Pioneers their third goal of the game, cutting the defecit to nine. Attacker Julia Ward scored in a man-down situation at the 16:43 mark to make the score 13-4, capitalizing on a free position shot.

Transylvania went on a 3-0 run between the 13:34 and 8:28 marks in the second hald, with goals from Harrison, midfielder Jessica Bier and attacker Lucy Meredith, making the score 14-7. After St. Vincent pushed the score to16-7, Ward scored off an assist from Harrison with just under five minutes to play in the game and Harrison netted another goal at the 3:39 juncture to cap scoring in the match.

Harrison scored a team-high four goals in the game, followed by Ward's two and one each from Erinkitola, Bier and Meredith. Ward won a game-high seven draw controls, while defender Jessica Chandler picked up a team-high four groundballs.

Transylvania finishes the season 7-9 but played strongly in ORLC action en route to earning the postseason bid.
