Women's lacrosse picks up ORLC win over Thomas More, 15-8

Box Score

CRESTVIEW HILL, Ky.—The Transylvania University women's lacrosse team picked up their third Ohio River Lacrosse Conference win on Wednesday, taking a 15-8 decision from the home standing Thomas More Saints.

The Pioneers led wire-to-wire, scoring from the get go and never looked back. Midfielder Rachel Harrison got the action started with an unassisted goal just 36 seconds into the game to put the Pioneers on top.  Attacker Julia Ward gave Transy a two-goal advantage just over a minute later. Harrison scored her second goal of the game and attacker Iyabo Erinkitola capped a 4-0 run to open the match within the next three minutes.

After relenting a goal at the 20:32 mark, Transylvania got back on the scoring track, building their lead to 6-2 on goals from Ward and Erinkitola. The Saints narrowed the margin to 6-2 with 16 minutes to play but defender Jessica Chandler, attacker Eden Yeiser and midfielder Jessica Bier each tallied a goal in the closing minutes of the half to send the Pioneers into the break holding a 9-3 lead.

The second half saw much of the same, with Ward opening the action at the 29:30 mark in a man-down situation to push the lead to seven. After a Saints' goal, two goals from Harrison and one from attacker Lucy Meredith gave Transylvania a 13-4 lead. Thomas More made a push, scoring four unanswered goals to draw the score to 13-8, but Harrison and Chandler halted the comeback attempt with goals at the 3:38 and 3:01 marks respectively to extend the margin to seven. The Pioneer defense held strong over the closing minutes, allowing just one goal in the final 12 minutes of play to give Transy a 15-8 victory.

Harrison's five goals led the way for Transylvania, followed by three from ward and two each from Chandler and Erinkitola. Harrison also dished out two of the Pioneers' three assists in the game. Despite picking up five fewer groundballs and committing one more turnover than the Saints, Transylvania was able to take 32 shots to Thomas More's 21. Transy added 18 draw controls, led by Ward's six. In the cage, goalkeeper Lydia Shaughnessy recorded eight saves on 16 shots on goal.

Transylvania (4-7, 3-2 ORLC) sits in fourth place in the conference, just two games out of first. They will return to action on Saturday when Defiance comes to Lexington for ORLC play. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
