Lexington, KY. – Hosting their archrivals on Staff Appreciation Day at Transylvania, the Pioneers softball team overwhelmed their archrival Centre Colonels, winning 7-0 and 10-2 (five innings) on Tuesday at Hall Field.

Freshman second baseman Brittany Mumford, junior shortstop Shelby Bailey, and junior first baseman Krista DeBurger led the Transylvania University women's softball team with two runs apiece to give the Pioneers a 7-0 win in the first of two on Tuesday with the Colonels.

Mumford connected on three hits and reached base four times, scoring twice. The freshman currently holds a batting average of .507, good for first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Bailey matched Mumford with two runs along with one RBI on two hits in four appearances at the plate. This marks the 20th run and 17th RBI of the season for the sophomore from Indianapolis, Indiana.

DeBurger produced one hit, one RBI, and earned two walks in her trips to the plate in the early week showdown with Centre.

Freshman centerfielder Shelbi Poehlein added the single run to add to the team-wide production. Poehlein achieved one RBI as well, her 15th of the 2016 season.

Freshman pitcher Jenna Stiles was credited with the win, facing 26 batters and giving up zero runs on four hits.

The Pioneers blanked the Colonels during the first two innings, 3-0 as Bailey, Poehlein, DeBurger, and freshman right fielder Shelby Gambrell all touched home to give Transylvania a comfortable 6-0 lead.

The defense on both sides then locked down and neither club scored throughout the remaining innings with the exception of Poehlein's solo run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Pioneers a seven-run advantage that locked up the win.

After a momentary break in action, the two schools cooled down, warmed back up, and took the field again for their second match of the afternoon.

Similar to the lopsided scoring of the initial tilt, the second meeting between these two teams resulted with an even larger gap of 10 to 2 in favor of the home Pioneers.

Mumford and freshman third baseman Meg Liter led the charge this time for the crimson crew as each had a pair of runs.

Sophomore leftfielder Madison Dorsey, DeBurger, Poehlein, senior catcher Katie Hulsman, freshman first baseman Jordan Kramer, and Gambrell contributed to the 10-run assault with all scoring a run.

Senior pitcher Jamie Lutes collected the second Pioneer win of the sunny, yet chilly Tuesday from the mound, conceding only two runs on nine hits against 27 batters.

Transylvania turned the scoreboard nine times before the Colonels scored their only two runs of the contest in the fifth inning as the Pioneers ended action early.  

The Pioneers have won seven out of their last 10 games and now have an overall record of 13-10. Transylvania will return to the diamond this Thursday at home as they host Spalding. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m. with a scheduled 5:30 p.m start for Game two.
