Pitching excellence elevates Pioneers to doubleheader sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team claimed two victories against the in-state rival Berea College Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon at Marquand filed thanks to a phenomenal performance by the Pioneers' pitching staff.

The Pioneers unleashed a measure of revenge and offensive breakthrough after the Mountaineers captured the first game of the series on Friday night in Berea. With the series victory, Transylvania's record moves to 4-6 on the season.

Game One

Transylvania took game one by the final score of 13-3, thanks to a stellar outing from senior pitcher Braden Johnson, in which he scattered 10 hits while striking out seven batters and no walks in the complete-game victory.

The Pioneers received a stellar day from senior outfielder Connor Blevins, who recorded three hits and four RBIs in the victory, including a three-run home run and a double.

The game got off to an even start, as both teams scored a run in the first inning off of triples by each team's respective leadoff hitter.

After recording a single in the bottom of the first inning, freshman designated hitter Cole Ratliff added a run for Transylvania on a Berea error, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Pioneers.

Leading 3-1, the Pioneers broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, as three Transy hits mixed with four Mountaineer errors led to four runs, extending the lead to 8-3 after six innings of action.

Johnson closed his dominant performance with two innings of scoreless work, sealing the 13-3 victory for the Pioneers.

Game Two

The second game of the afternoon was yet another pitching gem for the Pioneers, as sophomore pitcher Daniel Seitzinger earned the victory by only giving up two runs in five innings of work. Seitzinger struck out four Mountaineers on the day to punctuate his performance.

The game began precariously for the Pioneers as Berea took control from the start. The Mountaineers scored a run in each of the first two innings while Transylvania was unable to string hits together in the first three innings.

However, the Pioneers began making their move in the bottom of the fourth, as a single from senior first baseman Taylor Henley and a double from freshman outfielder Riley Willbur brought in two Pioneer runs to tie the game at 2-2.

The fifth inning proved to be the turning point of the game, as Transylvania pulled ahead for good on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Isaac Taylor.

The Pioneers needed one last standout pitching performance to earn the second victory of the day. After entering the game in the sixth inning, senior pitcher Adam Boone recorded four strikeouts in four innings of scoreless baseball en route to earning a four-inning save.

The Pioneers made the most out of their offensive opportunities, as they converted their six hits into four runs.

Henley led the Pioneers with a 2-for-3 day and a walk in the second game, while freshman infielder David McAnelly and Willbur each had a double. The Pioneers also stole five bases in the late afternoon game.

Next up, the Pioneers will face the John Carroll University Blue Streaks in a three-game series at Marquard Field. The series will commence with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday March 18, with the second game to follow at 3:00 p.m. The third game will get underway at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday March 19.
