Pioneers gallop to win against Wilmington

Box Score

The Transylvania men's lacrosse team overwhelmed the Wilmington College Quakers with a game-opening 7-0 run to storm to a 16-4 win Wednesday evening at Wiliams Stadium.

The Pioneers improved to 4-3 with the Wednesday night victory in their final tune-up before continuing the remaining portion of Ohio River Men's Lacrosse Conference next week.

Senior attack Clark Watts led the Pioneers with a hat-trick as his team took a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and an 8-3 lead by halftime.

Four other Pioneers along with Watts had multi-goal games. Senior midfielder David Smith, senior attack Zach Roby, freshman midfielder Corbyn Buchart and senior midfielder Zack Riggs each had two goals apiece in Transylvania's largest margin of victory thus far in the 2017 season.

Traveling over two hours into southwestern Ohio to take on the Quakers, the Pioneers got off the bus and quickly began converting on the field. Watts notched the first goal of the evening just 1:04 into the contest. Riggs made it a 2-0 lead for the Pioneers with 11:41 left in the first quarter, and junior midfielder Brendan Thompson pounced on the Quakers with the third goal at the 9:20 mark.

Transylvania began the second quarter with two more goals as sophomore attack Nick Bailey scored the seventh unanswered goal to start the game with 10:40 remaining in the first half.

Wilmington charged back into the game by scoring four of the next five goals in the contest to pull within 8-4 early in the third quarter.

However, the rest of the game belonged to Transylvania as the Pioneers scored the final eight goals to quadruple the lead on Wilmington.

Transylvania was immaculate on clears, carrying out 38 of 40 successful rides. The Pioneers outshot the Quakers 30 to 7 on goal, and won the ground ball category with 38 pickups compared to 31 by the Quakers.

The Pioneers are back in action next Wednesday at Pat Deacon Stadium in Lexington to face off against ORLC member Hanover College. Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
