Box Score Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team was denied its first win of the series against the Franklin College Grizzlies, falling 10-7 Friday night at Marquard Field.
The Pioneers and Grizzlies, meeting for the first of three games over their weekend in Lexington squared off Friday in a hit-filled affair. Franklin gathered 10 hits to eight for Transylvania.
The second inning witnessed an explosion of runs for both sides. Franklin led off the top of the second inning with a three-run output against starter Tom Banahan, who went four innings in his Friday start.
Transylvania responded with its most prolific offensive inning of the season in the bottom of the second inning. The Pioneers went on to score six runs to take a 6-3 lead after the second inning, as the Pioneers had five straight batters reach base. With the bases loaded, freshman infielder David McAnelly smacked a one-out single to center field, followed by a bases-loaded walk to sophomore outfielder Isaac Taylor for Transy's second run of the inning.
The Pioneers' incredible second inning was nearly complete when junior infielder Jared Williams hit a three-run triple to give Transylvania a 5-3 lead. An RBI single from senior outfielder Connor Blevins completed the scoring for the Pioneers in the inning.
Franklin again turned the tables in the top of the fifth inning as the Grizzlies collected a grand slam to take a 7-6 lead. But the Pioneers responded in the bottom half of the inning, using an RBI double into left field from freshman catcher Cole Ratliff that scored junior infielder Taylor Henley to knot the game at 7-7.
The Grizzlies closed strong down the stretch, taking advantage of an infield error to notch two runs in the seventh inning, and one more in the top of the ninth for the final 10-7 lead.
Transylvania dropped to 6-9 overall, and 1-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Williams led the Pioneers on Friday with a 2-for-5 day to go with three runs batted in. Ratliff was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk.
The Pioneers return to the diamond tomorrow at noon to face the Grizzlies for the second and third time in their series.
