Pioneers Men's Lax shuts out Lions in first half for lopsided win at home

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's lacrosse team shellshocked the Mount St. Joseph University Lions, scoring the first 17 goals of Wednesday night's meeting to roll to a 24-3 victory at Pat Deacon Stadium.

It was a game of domination in every department for the Pioneers, who outscored the Lions 8-0 in the first quarter and 13-0 for the half. Transylvania was flawless on rides, clearing 49 of 51 attempts and winning the ground ball battle, 53 to 18.

The Pioneers improved to 7-3 overall, and 3-0 in conference play. Wednesday night's victory was the sixth consecutive win by the Pioneers for the 2017 season.

Three different Pioneers achieved hat-tricks on Wednesday, with junior midfielder Josh Mesmer, senior attack Clark Watts, and sophomore attack Nick Bailey all accumulating a trio of scores.

The flurry of scoring for the Pioneers was swift, as they quickly put the game out of reach in the early stages. Sophomore attack Collin Ruegg led off the festivities with a quick strike off of a feed from freshman midfielder Trenton Sneed for Transylvania's first goal of the game 44 seconds into the contest.

Watts notched the first of his three goals just seconds later to grow Transy's lead to two goals. Sneed took his turn finding the net as he connected at the 12:29 mark of the first quarter. Mesmer was the next to score for the Pioneers as his goal at the 11:05 juncture of the first quarter handed Transylvania a 4-0 lead.

The Pioneers scored all eight of their goals in the first quarter within the first nine minutes before scoring settled down.

Still, intensity remained high throughout the game as each side maintained a tempo of physicality and hunger. The Pioneers protected their home by blanking Mt. St. Joseph 5-0 in the second quarter on the way to building a 13-0 halftime advantage.

Sophomore attack Chris Schaefer led the Pioneers with four assists. Senior midfielder Zack Riggs was the game leader in ground balls, scooping up nine for Transylvania.

Senior goalie Cooper Fogle secured the win for Transylvania, gathering one save before sitting out the second half with the game in hand.

The Pioneers are back on the road this weekend as they venture to Washington, Pennsylvania to take on the Washington & Jefferson College Presidents. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
