Transylvania men's lacrosse remains undefeated in ORLC after clear win vs Hanover

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 13-5 victory over the Hanover College Panthers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Wednesday night.

The win pushes the Pioneers' record to 10-3 overall and 6-0 in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference play, good for first place in the conference standings with just one game remaining in the regular season. With the win, the Pioneers clinch at least a share of the regular season title, their third straight.

Leading the way for the Pioneers was sophomore attacker Nick Bailey, who scored a career-high four goals in the victory and assisted on a fifth goal.

Joining Bailey with multiple goals were senior attacker Zach Roby and freshman midfielder Thompson Summers, who each scored twice for the Pioneers.

Defensively, the Pioneers were led by senior defender Rob Rhea, who grabbed five groundballs and caused two Hanover turnovers.

The Pioneers turned in a dominant first quarter as Roby, Summers, and senior attacker Clark Watts combined to put three goals on the board while the Transylvania defense combined to hold Hanover scoreless in the first 15 minutes of play.

Transylvania extended its lead to 5-0 during the first five minutes of the second quarter before Hanover got on the board at the 8:02 mark. The Pioneers responded to the Panthers' goal when Bailey scored his first goal of the day, extending the Transylvania lead to 6-1 heading into the halftime break.

The second half proved to be even more physical than the first as both teams looked to take control of the tempo early in the half. Hanover scored two early goals in the third quarter, but the Pioneers responded with three rapid goals in the final three minutes of the quarter, extending the lead to 10-3 at the start of the fourth quarter.

After a pair of early Hanover goals in the fourth, the Transylvania trio of Summers, Bailey, and freshman attacker Trenton Sneed combined to score the game's final three goals, pushing the score to 13-5 in favor of the Pioneers.

Goalkeeper Cooper Fogle continued a strong senior campaign, as he recorded nine saves while only allowing five goals in 60 minutes of action. Fogle continues to lead the ORLC with a 5.76 goals-against average.

Up next the Pioneers will conclude the regular season portion of their schedule with a crucial home matchup against the Thiel College Bobcats on Saturday afternoon, April 29. The Pioneers will put their program-record nine-game winning streak against Thiel, who sits one game back of Transylvania in the conference standings. Opening face-off between the Bobcats and Pioneers is set for 2:30 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.

The game will also serve as Senior Day for Transylvania's eight seniors, who will be honored in a ceremony just prior to the start of the game. On the line for Transylvania is an opportunity to win the ORLC regular-season title outright and gain homefield advantage all the way through the ORLC conference tournament which begins a week from Wednesday.
