Transylvania baseball sweeps Calvin in Friday doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Transylvania 6 Calvin 0

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team picked up a pair of impressive wins against the Calvin College Knights in a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Marquard Field, winning 3-2 in 10 innings in game one, and 6-0 in game two.

The Pioneers sharpened their season record to 6-7 with the pair of wins as they captured the first game of the day in dramatic fashion, using a walk-off base hit from Jason Pastoor. The Pioneers followed up the game one theatrics with a combined 14-strikeout performance from freshman pitchers Jake Schmidt and Drew Demler as the Pioneers pulled away from Calvin in the nightcap.

The first game of the day was tightly contested as Calvin went ahead, 2-0 in the top of the second inning on a pair of RBI singles. Transylvania responded in the bottom half of the frame as freshman infielder Hudson Chastain drove in sophomore outfielder Riley Willbur on a sacrifice fly RBI.

Freshman starting pitcher Evan Hall locked down Calvin for the next six innings, scattering six hits over eight innings while registering three strikeouts.

Chastain came through again for the Pioneers in the bottom of the fourth inning, delivering his second RBI of the day on a single to left field to score freshman infielder Wade LoPiccolo and tie up Calvin at 2-2.

The game continued into extra innings, and relief pitcher Collin Johnson retired the side to give the Pioneers another chance for victory in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Ratliff drew a one-out walk and stole second base with junior first baseman Jason Pastoor up to bat. Pastoor delivered a single into left field that scored Ratliff for a hard-fought comeback win.

In game two, Transylvania took a 2-0 lead in the third inning off RBIs from sophomore designated hitter Austin Butts and an RBI groundout by Ratliff.

With Schmidt and Demler working in tandem to confound Calvin batters, Transylvania summoned more offense in the seventh in eighth innings as Butts came through with a two-run single in the seventh, and the Pioneers plated Willbur and sophomore outfielder David McAnelly in the eighth.

Butts led the Pioneers with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with three RBI.

Transylvania is back in action tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Marquard Field as they take on John Carroll University in the tail end of a doubleheader featuring John Carroll and Calvin in a 12 noon first pitch.
