Transylvania baseball gains convincing win at Centre on Monday night

Box Score

Danville, Ky. – The Transylvania baseball team completed a wire-to-wire mastery over the Centre College Colonels on Monday night, taking a 10-3 win at Gary Wright Field.

The Pioneers scored three runs in each of the first two innings on Monday night against their Central Kentucky rivals, compiling a 6-0 lead and never looking back as they picked up their ninth win of the season to move to 9-11 overall. Centre dropped to 12-15 on the year.

Sophomore catcher Cole Ratliff led the Pioneers offensively, providing three of the team's seven hits on the evening in a 3-for-5 night at the plate. Ratliff added four RBI as the Pioneers overwhelmed the Colonels from the outset.

Sophomore pitcher Robert Young picked up his first win of the year in a Monday night start, going six innings and hurling a career-high eight strikeouts. Young pitched cleanly, yielding just two walks and allowing one hit, and no earned runs.

Freshman infielder Hudson Chastain added to the offensive production, reaching base four times on the night, all on walks.

The Pioneers scored in double-digit runs on Monday thanks to a season-high 17 steals, its highest total in one game in at least eight seasons.

The Pioneers came out firing to start the evening, posting three runs in the top of the first inning. Ratliff drove in freshman outfielder Wade LoPiccolo on a one-out single, and Chastain scored via an infielding error by the Colonels. Sophomore outfielder Riley Willbur guided Ratliff home on a sacrifice fly RBI to hand the Pioneers a 3-0 cushion.

Transylvania remained aggressive in the second inning, placing baserunners on and gaining five stolen bases. Junior outfielder Isaac Taylor stole home plate on a double steal for a 5-0 Pioneers lead, and Ratliff drove in Chastain on an RBI double to put the Pioneers ahead by six runs.

The Pioneers put runs on the board in each of the first four innings, adding one run in the third and two more in the fourth to put the game out of reach early.

Transylvania's pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts on the night, their second-highest single-game strikeout total of the season.

Monday's game served as a makeup contest for last Wednesday's contest which was previously scheduled to be held at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington but was postponed due to rain.

The Pioneers turn around for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday versus the Mount St. Joseph University Lions. The Pioneers and Lions converge upon Marquard Field in Lexington at 1:00 p.m. for the game one first pitch, followed by another contest at approximately 4:00 p.m.
